A significant increase in cases manifesting both Gender Dysphoria (GD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have been observed. Historically this co-occurrence has not been the focus of attention for mental health professionals who would opt to specialize in the evaluation and treatment of one of these areas, but not in both. This situation has triggered the need for professionals from both fields to collaborate in the assessment and treatment of GD in the context of ASD, and vice versa. Aspects, including ethical considerations of this collaboration in the context of the assessment and treatment process will be discussed.

Dr. John
Strang
Dr. Strang will share from his rich experience working with autistic gender diverse youth. The presentation will include the most up-to-date research findings on the co-occurrence, life stories of autistic transgender individuals, assessment and treatment recommendations for providers, and stories of hope and resilience for families struggling to know how best to support their kids with the co-occurrence. The current care guidelines for autistic-gender diverse youth will be carefully reviewed, and the voices and experiences of individuals with the co-occurrence will be interwoven throughout. Common needs of neurodiverse gender minority individuals will be explored, including the challenges that arise from being a “double minority.” The talk will also highlight unique perspectives and strengths of those with the co-occurrence, celebrating the ways that these individuals give us fresh eyes for both the experience and expression of gender diversity.

Dr. Brett
Leimkuhler Ph.D.
Clinical neuropsychologist Dr. Leimkuhler will discuss the comprehensive evaluation process of ASD. Dr. Leimkuhler’s professional philosophy emphasizes the importance of the evaluation process, not only as a mean to obtain a diagnosis, but to provide an in-depth understanding of the entire client. Taking this into consideration, he will discuss the importance of considering Gender Dysporia in the context of the ASD evaluation to promote deeper self-understanding of the individual and ultimately to help them achieve their true potential.
